How to Use Tally Counter App
This guide walks you through every feature of Tally Counter App, from your first counter to advanced workflows. Total reading time: 5 minutes. Total time to working multi-counter setup: 2 minutes.
Step 1: Open the App
Visit tallycounterapp.org in any modern browser — Chrome, Safari, Firefox, or Edge on any device. No download, no signup. The first counter loads in about one second.
Pro tip: On a phone, add the page to your home screen (Share button → "Add to Home Screen") for one-tap launch like a native app.
Step 2: Add Your First Counter
The home screen shows a default counter. Tap the large "+" button (or use the keyboard Space bar) to count up. Tap "-" to count down.
To add more counters, click "Add Counter" in the top toolbar. Each new counter starts at zero with a default label you can customize.
Step 3: Label Each Counter
Tap the label text above each counter to edit it. Use clear, specific names:
- For sports: "Maya - Reps", "Team A", "Made", "Attempted"
- For classrooms: "Present", "Absent", "Tardy", or per-student labels
- For research: "Northern Cardinal", "Blue Jay", "American Robin"
- For retail: "Entries", "Exits", "Capacity"
Labels persist between sessions and across devices (if signed in for sync).
Step 4: Pick Your View Mode
Three view modes adapt to your counting style:
- Dual view — two counters side-by-side with extra-large tap targets. Best for head-to-head counting (Team A vs Team B, made vs attempted, entries vs exits).
- Grid view — all counters visible at once in a tile layout. Best for multi-category tracking (students, species, SKUs).
- List view — compact vertical list. Best for many counters on a small screen.
Switch modes using the view toggle in the top toolbar. The app remembers your preference between sessions.
Step 5: Use Full-Screen Focus Mode
Tap the full-screen icon to maximize the counter display. Useful for events (project to a TV), classrooms (display on whiteboard), sports venues (visible from across the court), and outdoor counting (visible in bright sunlight). Exit full-screen with the same icon or by pressing Escape.
Step 6: Enable Dark Mode (Optional)
Toggle dark mode in the navigation bar. The app respects your system theme by default. Dark mode reduces eye strain during long counting sessions in low-light environments.
Step 7: Use Keyboard Shortcuts
For speed-counting on a laptop or desktop, use keyboard shortcuts:
- Space or Enter — increment the active counter
- Shift + Space — decrement
- R — reset the active counter
- Arrow keys — navigate between counters
- Numbers 1-9 — jump to specific counter
- F — toggle full-screen mode
- D — toggle dark/light mode
Step 8: Sync Across Devices (Optional)
For cross-device sync, create a free account via the "Sign In" button. Your counters automatically sync to the cloud. Sign in on any other device (phone, tablet, laptop) and your counters appear with current values. Sync runs in the background; updates propagate within a few seconds.
Step 9: Work Offline
If you lose internet (wilderness research, basement gym, factory floor), Tally Counter App continues working. Counts save in your browser's local storage. When you reconnect, if you're signed in for cloud sync, counts upload to your account automatically.
Step 10: Reset When Done
At the end of a session, reset individual counters or all counters. Use the per-counter reset button to clear just one (e.g., end of class period) or the master reset to clear all (e.g., start of new event). Hit undo immediately if you reset by accident.
